There are 1,600 chapters of SHH, a national society for those with a 90 average in Spanish for 3 consecutive semesters, including Spanish 3. Holding lighted candles at a special evening ceremony, students pledge to master Spanish (con la ayuda de Dios) to foster peace and understanding. They receive national SHH certificates and woven badges of the Spanish coat of arms, becoming eligible for many awards: $2000 prizes for essay-writing, expense-paid trips to a Spanish-speaking country, and $35 for writings or art works published in ¡ALBRICIAS!, the SHH national magazine.

VWA's Andalucia chapter has won Chapter-of-the-Year plaque five times, and Activity-of-the-Year three times. The $700 prize money was donated to Third World children. Many students have been published in Albricias! Two have won trips to Costa Rica and Mexico, and four have won $1000 in SHH essay contests.
