Senior Day for our Varsity Lacrosse team…a special day to celebrate four incredible leaders: Tessa Bowers, Sofia Kearns, Gigi Longo, and Alexis Sica. After nearly a year of dedication, curiosity, and perseverance, Mrs. Pasko’s AP Research students have officially submitted their final papers to the College Board, and took a well-deserved moment to celebrate. From choosing their topics to diving into background research, building instruments, gathering and analyzing data, and crafting thoughtful, organized arguments, these students have truly done it all. Their work now heads to Kansas City, where it will be read and scored by educators from across the country in early June. For now, it’s time to pause, recharge, and enjoy the moment (as you can see 😊). The final stretch of the year will bring a lighter pace, and even a dive into classic British satire to close things out. So proud of this group and all they’ve accomplished. 7th Grade Experience-Villa Girl for a Day…A Full House at Villa Walsh Academy! Today, our campus was absolutely buzzing as we welcomed a full-to-capacity group of 7th graders from surrounding schools for our Villa Girl for a Day experience, and what a day it was! From the moment they arrived, our incredible student ambassadors made each guest feel right at home, sharing lunch, laughter, and their own Villa stories. The day was filled with hands-on experiences that truly brought Villa to life: • Serving with heart through Campus Ministry, assembling Blessing Bags for those in need, filled with essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, snacks, wipes, and handwritten notes of encouragement. These will be shared with the CFR Friars in Newark to distribute within their community • Exploring the science labs with exciting experiments • Diving into robotics, driving our robot and creating custom keychains with our 3D printers • Getting creative in the art room with fun, hands-on crafts • Ending in the beautiful St. Lucy Chapel, where our faith and foundation shine brightest • And of course, a sweet treat to wrap it all up with ice cream in our Athletic Center! It was a day full of energy, curiosity, connection, and purpose, a true glimpse into what makes Villa so special. This is what it means to be a Villa girl. This is how Villa shines! Rooted in Love, Growing in Faith What a beautiful and memorable day at Villa Walsh as we welcomed our grandparents to campus for our very first Grandparents Day, a celebration we are so excited to begin and continue for years to come. From the moment they arrived, our halls were filled with smiles, laughter, and the unmistakable joy of generations coming together. Grandparents and students shared a special lunch, spent time planting flowers together, creating something meaningful to take home, and enjoyed writing heartfelt letters to one another. There was plenty of fun too, with bingo games bringing out lots of laughter and a little friendly competition! Our guests even joined their granddaughters in the classroom, experiencing a glimpse of daily life at Villa, before the day came to a truly meaningful close with Mass, where we gathered in gratitude for the love and faith that bind our families together. Future Healthcare Leaders in Action Villa Walsh Academy’s HOSA members made an inspiring debut at their first state-wide event! Lia Griffin ’27, Vivienne Qiao ’28, Mila Chevallier ’29, and Bridget Drew ’26 attended the HOSA New Jersey State Leadership Conference this past Saturday, representing our growing club with curiosity, compassion, and enthusiasm. Throughout the day, they explored a wide range of healthcare fields through engaging presentations and hands-on workshops, gaining insight into long-term care, practicing patient communication, and learning how to thoughtfully deliver diagnoses. They also had the opportunity to connect with fellow HOSA members from schools across the state and speak with representatives from colleges and organizations, including the U.S. Navy. In true Villa spirit, our students also made an impact beyond the conference, delivering medical and hygiene supplies collected during our school-wide drive. These donations will support rural communities in Tanzania, extending their learning into meaningful service. This experience was both valuable and inspiring, especially for our underclassmen, sparking excitement to grow HOSA at Villa and pursue even more opportunities in the healthcare field. Retreat Day Highlights! On October 22nd, VWA’s 7th and 8th graders embarked on their annual retreat at Christ the King Church in New Vernon. The day began with a beautiful Mass, setting a reflective tone for the journey ahead. After Mass, students engaged in fun icebreakers and games - including musical chairs - to strengthen their bonds and build community. They took time for personal reflection and journaling, focusing on the theme of God’s immense love for each of us. The day also included a deep dive into the Prodigal Son scripture passage, where students engaged in meaningful discussions about the Father’s unconditional love and His welcoming embrace. On Friday, October 18, 2024, the students, faculty, and administration of Villa Walsh Academy came together to celebrate Sr. Laura Bezila’s 25th Jubilee! Sr. Laura, M.P.F., teaches theology to the 10th grade class. She began her adult life as an auditor before discerning a call from the Lord to serve in consecrated life, leading her to enter the Religious Teachers Filippini. With a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in Systematic Theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, she has spent the majority of her ministry at Villa Walsh Academy. Sister Laura enjoys continuing the mission of St. Lucy Filippini, helping students grow in their knowledge, love, and service of God. What an incredible day for VWA! Yesterday marked our 4th consecutive NJAC Small Schools Championship! Our five-runner average of 19:34 is the fastest recorded to date on the current course at Greystone! Exciting news from Villa Walsh Academy! Our very own Maggie Boler ‘25 met with Milesprint for an inspiring interview about her journey as a rookie cross country runner after her impressive Varsity F win at the Shore Coaches Invitational. After years as a VWA soccer player, she decided to lace up her running shoes and took on the challenge of cross country as a senior—winning the race with an impressive time of 19:10! A group of Villa Walsh Academy students joined with a group of Delbarton students to travel to Trenton, NJ for the March for Life on September 26th. A deeply meaningful experience, the students united as a community to support life and to stand in prayer for those most vulnerable. Our day began with Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, concelebrated by bishops from various dioceses in New Jersey, including our own Bishop Kevin Sweeney. Afterward, students participated in the rally, where they listened to speakers and joined in prayer with fellow attendees. We wrapped up the day by walking through the streets of Trenton. On Friday, October 4, the faculty and administration of Villa Walsh Academy came together for a peaceful retreat at St. Joseph by the Sea. The conference, led by Fr. Scott Shaffer, began with a light breakfast, followed by Mass, a delicious lunch, and concluded with time to walk, read, or relax on the beach. The homily centered on the ways in which each academic subject may be approached from a faith-based perspective. Fr. Schaffer also called for each one of us to be pilgrims of hope during the upcoming Jubilee Year, a virtue that is especially vital in today’s world. Students in Mrs. Pasko’s AP Research class traveled to Rutgers University’s Alexander Library in New Brunswick, where they spent time with a Rutgers librarian to learn the techniques and tools necessary to search in RU databases. The students expanded on their previous research and gathered sources to develop arguments and methods for their 5,000-word papers due in April. The students visited the stacks, where they raced to locate a book using a call number identified from the database. The trip also included a session with a faculty member of RU’s Honors College, who gave an overview of the program and introduced some of the key concepts taught in first year courses, such as interview skills and ways in which to assess the credibility of sources. This summer, Emma Naughton ’26 participated in Catholic Heart Work Camp with her youth group, BOLD, in Niagara Falls, NY. Over the course of the week, Emma and her team dedicated their efforts to restoring the Historic Holy Trinity Church—a national landmark that is set to be transformed into a WWII memorial museum. In addition to their service work, Emma deepened her faith alongside 200 other teenagers from across the country, all under the theme “Here and Now” for this year’s Catholic Heart. This summer, Cierra Wolckenhauer ’25 was chosen to participate in the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Conservatory! Auditions began in March to secure her spot in the program. On the first day, she auditioned for solos, duets, and trios, and the following day she received the exciting news that she was accepted to the cast! This year’s concert focused on celebrating Paper Mill Playhouse’s 85 seasons. Cierra and her fellow participants explored the history of the theatre, including famous shows, notable actors, and productions that began at The Paper Mill and were later moved to Broadway. Over the course of five weeks, Cierra engaged in a variety of classes and workshops, such as acting, musical theatre audition skills, stage combat, and dance. These were followed by both full company and section rehearsals, culminating in a final production that will soon be available to watch on YouTube. Working with theatre professionals on a professional stage was an incredible experience for Cierra. She’s gained invaluable knowledge and skills that she will carry forward into her future endeavors. Villa Walsh Academy’s rising junior, Karina Siegel ‘26, was accepted into the Summer Immersion Law Institute at Wake Forest University. A hands-on experience, Karina learned about confidentiality, candor, conflicts, and ethics from professors, lawyers, law students, and North Carolina state judges. Mrs. Manley, VWA’s Director of Curriculum, worked with former colleagues at the Morris Plains Board of Education and NJIT to open doors for Angelina Risk ’25, Anna Collins ’25, Claudia Steinberg ’25, Malia Nugent ’25, and Lynette Gao ’25 from Villa Walsh Academy’s FIRST® Robotics Competition Team 8513 Sisters 1st to participate in a research internship at NJIT’s Swissler Innovative Robotics Lab, part of a multi-million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). These talented young women will be designing, prototyping, and testing a walking beam mechanism for a Slime Mold Inspired Self Assembling Robotic Conveyor System to remediate floods in urban areas. Working closely with Dr. Swissler’s team, they will gain hands-on experience in mechanical design and manufacturing, CAD, mechatronics, and programming. Villa Walsh Academy rising senior, Malia Nugent ’25, went straight to work after the school year ended to explore avenues for her future! Accepted into the United States Air Force Academy Summer Seminar, Malia traveled to Colorado Springs for a four day hands-on experience of what it means to be an US Air Force Academy cadet on campus. She then traveled to West Point to attend a Summer Leadership Program, a week long immersion program designed to provide rising high school seniors the ability to learn within West Point’s state of the art educational facilities, as well as take part in team building athletic activities and realistic military training. Here’s a snapshot of my incredible two-week Operation Smile surgical program in Koforidua: • Representing America as one of three volunteers for the US. • Serving as a student volunteer, focusing on Operation Smile’s pillars: service, education, advocacy, and leadership. • Playing with and entertaining children and patients throughout screenings, appointments, and pre/post-op care. • Educating patients, families, the local nursing school, and Suhyen village on dental care, nutrition, burn care, CPR, and handwashing. • Presenting a water filter to Suhyen’s leader and demonstrating its effectiveness by drinking filtered swamp water! • Speaking on Ghana’s top radio show, “GBC Sunrise FM,” about the importance of student volunteers and breaking stigmas around cleft conditions. • Witnessing multiple surgeries and discussing procedures with operating surgeons. • Collaborating with medical volunteers to understand comprehensive patient care beyond the operating room. Villa Walsh Academy played a crucial role in preparing me for this journey. Their support, from generous donations to invaluable life skills, shaped my experience profoundly. VWA’s Sisters 1st FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 8513 took a road trip with RiRi to the R. Seelaus & Co. Headquarters to celebrate their trip to the World Championship in April! R. Seelaus & Co.,a women-owned business enterprise, is one of Sisters 1st’s largest donor. Their unwavering support and constant encouragement facilitated Sisters 1st’s trip to the World Championship for which the VWA community is very grateful. The girls explained their various roles within the team, from engineering and coding, to design-thinking and community outreach. They also demonstrated the incredible attributes of RiRi to the employees, who were all impressed by the agility and precision of the robot. A highlight of the day was a career discussion with three female executives who shared words of wisdom with the students as they begin to formulate their future career paths. The girls ended the day with a special treat! A special ice cream sundae named ‘Scream for Villa Walsh Robotics’ was created for the team by the ‘Scream Truck’, a favorite ice cream truck of the R. Seelaus employees. On Wednesday, May 22, the Villa Walsh Academy sophomore class presented the results of their year-long Sophomore Research Projects to the teachers, administrators, and student body. Working with mentors throughout the school year, the students investigated relevant and current scientific topics of personal interest using a variety of sources. Topics of study were as varied as the individual students. We learned about the science of happiness, cognitive effects of anesthesia on the elderly, cell phone addiction, phantom limbs, Multiple Sclerosis in women, saving the coral reefs, the affects of sleep deprivation on teens, the social and emotional effects of dementia, positive affects of dance therapy, to name a few.
