Enseñando: Sharing the Gift of Language Through Service On June 8, 2026, nine members of the Villa Walsh Academy Spanish Honor Society and Spanish Club participated in the 18th Annual St. Gerard Spanish Day at St. Gerard School in Paterson. Serving as teachers for the day, the Villa students taught Spanish lessons to children in grades 1 through 6. Each student prepared her own lesson plans and brought engaging materials, prizes, and treats to create a fun and interactive learning experience for the young learners. We extend our gratitude to Amy Perlera, Araya Singh, Natalie Brinkworth, Catherine Azares, Grace Boler, Lauren Petrie, Rylie McAloon, Mila Chevalier, and Mia Marulanda for generously sharing their time, talents, and enthusiasm. A special thank you to our parent volunteers and chaperones, Mrs. Donna Pylyp, Mrs. Dina Perlera, Mrs. Therese Imossi, and Sr. Josephine Palmeri, for their support as team teachers, drivers, and mentors throughout the day. Celebrating Villa Sisterhood Across the Years! This spring, Villa Walsh Academy was delighted to welcome home two special reunion classes as they gathered to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the lifelong bonds formed at Villa. The Class of 2001 recently celebrated its 25th Reunion, returning to campus to visit former teachers, tour the Academy, and relive cherished memories before gathering at Bistro 73 for an evening of friendship, laughter, and reminiscing. Their Villa spirit continued to shine as they proudly led all alumnae classes in participation during Green & White Giving Day. The Class of 2006 marked its 20th Reunion Weekend with a joyful gathering at Town Bar & Kitchen in Morristown, followed by a beautiful Mass in St. Lucy Chapel and refreshments in Grace Ann Café with classmates and families. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate friendships that have stood the test of time and reconnect with the Villa community. No matter how many years have passed, one thing remains the same, once a Villa girl, always a Villa girl. This year, twelve outstanding Villa Walsh Academy students completed the AP Capstone Program, a rigorous two-year academic experience that challenges students to think critically, conduct original research, and communicate their findings with confidence. Beginning with AP Seminar under the guidance of Mrs. Julie Oliveros and culminating in AP Research with Mrs. Kristina Pasko, students developed the skills necessary to tackle complex, real-world questions through scholarly inquiry. Their independent research projects explored a wide range of timely topics, including social media, mental health, genetics, nutrition, empathy, and public perception. Through months of investigation, analysis, and presentation, these young scholars demonstrated remarkable curiosity, perseverance, and intellectual rigor. The AP Capstone Program continues to provide Villa Walsh students with an exceptional opportunity to engage in college-level research while developing the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in higher education and beyond. FIELD DAY 2026 ☀️ Back on April 30th, our campus was bursting with color, laughter, and Villa spirit during this year’s Field Day! Students from grades 7–12 joined together on color teams, competing side-by-side in a full day of games, challenges, teamwork, and unforgettable fun. From the rainbow of team colors across campus to the nonstop cheering and friendly competition, the energy was amazing all day long. On Tuesday, May 12, the Villa Walsh Academy community gathered in the garden outside of St. Lucy Chapel to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Lucy Filippini. Students, faculty, and the Religious Teachers Filippini came together in prayer and gratitude for the life and vocation of St. Lucy, whose mission to educate and inspire young women continues to guide Villa each day. Each member of our community brought flowers from home to place before St. Lucy’s statue, creating a beautiful tribute filled with prayer intentions, reflection, and faith. On May 8, our Villa Walsh Academy community gathered in the garden for one of our most beautiful and cherished traditions, the May Crowning of the Blessed Mother. Seniors Bridget Boler had the honor of crowning Mary, while Clodagh Bateson carried the crown down the garden walk, passing between the members of the Class of 2026 who stood lined along both sides in a touching tribute to faith and sisterhood. A multilingual rosary was prayerfully recited during the ceremony, beautifully reflecting the unity and diversity of our Villa community. Following the crowning, each senior placed flowers in the vases before the statue of Mary, creating a meaningful moment of prayer, reflection, and gratitude as they prepare for graduation and their next chapter. Retreat Day Highlights! On October 22nd, VWA’s 7th and 8th graders embarked on their annual retreat at Christ the King Church in New Vernon. The day began with a beautiful Mass, setting a reflective tone for the journey ahead. After Mass, students engaged in fun icebreakers and games - including musical chairs - to strengthen their bonds and build community. They took time for personal reflection and journaling, focusing on the theme of God’s immense love for each of us. The day also included a deep dive into the Prodigal Son scripture passage, where students engaged in meaningful discussions about the Father’s unconditional love and His welcoming embrace. On Friday, October 18, 2024, the students, faculty, and administration of Villa Walsh Academy came together to celebrate Sr. Laura Bezila’s 25th Jubilee! Sr. Laura, M.P.F., teaches theology to the 10th grade class. She began her adult life as an auditor before discerning a call from the Lord to serve in consecrated life, leading her to enter the Religious Teachers Filippini. With a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in Systematic Theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, she has spent the majority of her ministry at Villa Walsh Academy. Sister Laura enjoys continuing the mission of St. Lucy Filippini, helping students grow in their knowledge, love, and service of God. A group of Villa Walsh Academy students joined with a group of Delbarton students to travel to Trenton, NJ for the March for Life on September 26th. A deeply meaningful experience, the students united as a community to support life and to stand in prayer for those most vulnerable. Our day began with Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, concelebrated by bishops from various dioceses in New Jersey, including our own Bishop Kevin Sweeney. Afterward, students participated in the rally, where they listened to speakers and joined in prayer with fellow attendees. We wrapped up the day by walking through the streets of Trenton. On Friday, October 4, the faculty and administration of Villa Walsh Academy came together for a peaceful retreat at St. Joseph by the Sea. The conference, led by Fr. Scott Shaffer, began with a light breakfast, followed by Mass, a delicious lunch, and concluded with time to walk, read, or relax on the beach. The homily centered on the ways in which each academic subject may be approached from a faith-based perspective. Fr. Schaffer also called for each one of us to be pilgrims of hope during the upcoming Jubilee Year, a virtue that is especially vital in today’s world. Students in Mrs. Pasko’s AP Research class traveled to Rutgers University’s Alexander Library in New Brunswick, where they spent time with a Rutgers librarian to learn the techniques and tools necessary to search in RU databases. The students expanded on their previous research and gathered sources to develop arguments and methods for their 5,000-word papers due in April. The students visited the stacks, where they raced to locate a book using a call number identified from the database. The trip also included a session with a faculty member of RU’s Honors College, who gave an overview of the program and introduced some of the key concepts taught in first year courses, such as interview skills and ways in which to assess the credibility of sources. This summer, Emma Naughton ’26 participated in Catholic Heart Work Camp with her youth group, BOLD, in Niagara Falls, NY. Over the course of the week, Emma and her team dedicated their efforts to restoring the Historic Holy Trinity Church—a national landmark that is set to be transformed into a WWII memorial museum. In addition to their service work, Emma deepened her faith alongside 200 other teenagers from across the country, all under the theme “Here and Now” for this year’s Catholic Heart. To conclude their impactful week, BOLD visited the breathtaking falls before embarking on the six-hour drive back to New Jersey. Emma! This summer, Cierra Wolckenhauer ’25 was chosen to participate in the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Conservatory! Auditions began in March to secure her spot in the program. On the first day, she auditioned for solos, duets, and trios, and the following day she received the exciting news that she was accepted to the cast! This year’s concert focused on celebrating Paper Mill Playhouse’s 85 seasons. Cierra and her fellow participants explored the history of the theatre, including famous shows, notable actors, and productions that began at The Paper Mill and were later moved to Broadway. Over the course of five weeks, Cierra engaged in a variety of classes and workshops, such as acting, musical theatre audition skills, stage combat, and dance. These were followed by both full company and section rehearsals, culminating in a final production that will soon be available to watch on YouTube. Working with theatre professionals on a professional stage was an incredible experience for Cierra. She’s gained invaluable knowledge and skills that she will carry forward into her future endeavors. Villa Walsh Academy’s rising junior, Karina Siegel ‘26, was accepted into the Summer Immersion Law Institute at Wake Forest University. A hands-on experience, Karina learned about confidentiality, candor, conflicts, and ethics from professors, lawyers, law students, and North Carolina state judges. Mrs. Manley, VWA’s Director of Curriculum, worked with former colleagues at the Morris Plains Board of Education and NJIT to open doors for Angelina Risk ’25, Anna Collins ’25, Claudia Steinberg ’25, Malia Nugent ’25, and Lynette Gao ’25 from Villa Walsh Academy’s FIRST® Robotics Competition Team 8513 Sisters 1st to participate in a research internship at NJIT’s Swissler Innovative Robotics Lab, part of a multi-million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). These talented young women will be designing, prototyping, and testing a walking beam mechanism for a Slime Mold Inspired Self Assembling Robotic Conveyor System to remediate floods in urban areas. Working closely with Dr. Swissler’s team, they will gain hands-on experience in mechanical design and manufacturing, CAD, mechatronics, and programming. Villa Walsh Academy rising senior, Malia Nugent ’25, went straight to work after the school year ended to explore avenues for her future! Accepted into the United States Air Force Academy Summer Seminar, Malia traveled to Colorado Springs for a four day hands-on experience of what it means to be an US Air Force Academy cadet on campus. She then traveled to West Point to attend a Summer Leadership Program, a week long immersion program designed to provide rising high school seniors the ability to learn within West Point’s state of the art educational facilities, as well as take part in team building athletic activities and realistic military training. Here’s a snapshot of my incredible two-week Operation Smile surgical program in Koforidua: • Representing America as one of three volunteers for the US. • Serving as a student volunteer, focusing on Operation Smile’s pillars: service, education, advocacy, and leadership. • Playing with and entertaining children and patients throughout screenings, appointments, and pre/post-op care. • Educating patients, families, the local nursing school, and Suhyen village on dental care, nutrition, burn care, CPR, and handwashing. • Presenting a water filter to Suhyen’s leader and demonstrating its effectiveness by drinking filtered swamp water! • Speaking on Ghana’s top radio show, “GBC Sunrise FM,” about the importance of student volunteers and breaking stigmas around cleft conditions. • Witnessing multiple surgeries and discussing procedures with operating surgeons. • Collaborating with medical volunteers to understand comprehensive patient care beyond the operating room. On Sunday, June 16, the Villa Walsh Academy Distance Medley Relay team qualified to compete at the 2024 New Balance Nationals Outdoor at the University of Pennsylvania. Swift on their feet, the team, made up of Clodagh Bateson ‘26, Maggie Boler ‘25, Blythe Dudley ‘26 and Ines Lemee ‘25, bested 21 public and private high schools from throughout the country. 🌞☀️ SUMMER SERVICE HIGHLIGHT ☀️🌞 Yesterday, June 10, 2024, marked the 16th annual St. Gerard Day, and our VWA Spanish Honor Society & Club members stepped up to make it memorable! Teaching Spanish to the vibrant children of St. Gerard School in inner-city Paterson, our twelve dedicated members covered Grades 1 to 8. From crafting lesson plans to providing snacks and prizes, they brought the language alive in every classroom. And what’s a school day without recess? Our girls joined their little students on the playground, spreading laughter and fun! A huge round of applause to our incredible officers: Ines Lemee, Angelina Rizk, Emma Naughton, Sofia Jordao, Sabrina Pasko, Nora Dam, Miranda Aviles, Cierra Wolckenhauer, Leah Costa, Marissa Noonan, Claudia Aragon, and our alumna Juli Orfini (‘05)! VWA’s Sisters 1st FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 8513 took a road trip with RiRi to the R. Seelaus & Co. Headquarters to celebrate their trip to the World Championship in April! R. Seelaus & Co.,a women-owned business enterprise, is one of Sisters 1st’s largest donor. Their unwavering support and constant encouragement facilitated Sisters 1st’s trip to the World Championship for which the VWA community is very grateful. The girls explained their various roles within the team, from engineering and coding, to design-thinking and community outreach. They also demonstrated the incredible attributes of RiRi to the employees, who were all impressed by the agility and precision of the robot. A highlight of the day was a career discussion with three female executives who shared words of wisdom with the students as they begin to formulate their future career paths. The girls ended the day with a special treat! A special ice cream sundae named ‘Scream for Villa Walsh Robotics’ was created for the team by the ‘Scream Truck’, a favorite ice cream truck of the R. Seelaus employees. On Wednesday, May 22, the Villa Walsh Academy sophomore class presented the results of their year-long Sophomore Research Projects to the teachers, administrators, and student body. Working with mentors throughout the school year, the students investigated relevant and current scientific topics of personal interest using a variety of sources. Topics of study were as varied as the individual students. We learned about the science of happiness, cognitive effects of anesthesia on the elderly, cell phone addiction, phantom limbs, Multiple Sclerosis in women, saving the coral reefs, the affects of sleep deprivation on teens, the social and emotional effects of dementia, positive affects of dance therapy, to name a few.
